The dangers of radon

Radon is a harmful, odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that comes from the decomposition of naturally occurring uranium in the soil. Radon is radioactive and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Quebec, according to Health Canada and the Quebec Lung Association.

The presence of radon poses a health hazard when radon accumulates in an enclosed space, like your home. Its concentration can then reach a high level and compromise your well-being in the long term.

Radon Detection

To find out if radon poses a health hazard, measure your concentration in your home. Health Canada suggests a measure over the long term. The detection process takes about 3 months, preferably during the winter, when the house is heated and the windows are closed.

In certain circumstances, for example at the time of a real estate transaction, it remains possible to carry out a short-term detection test, if the circumstances so require. A preliminary measurement over 2 to 7 days can then be made. It must then be followed by a long-term test that will confirm the results.

Radon mitigation

How can I reduce the level of radon in my home?  Radon concentration can be reduced to a very low level. In the vast majority of cases, it is achieved by sealing all entry points and creating a negative pressure under the slab in the basement using a specialized fan that vents radon to the outside. The goal is to reduce the radon concentration to a safe level by using the smallest possible fan.
